I have a painted white newel post. Unfortunately, due to an active family with 2 young kids, the corners on the cap is getting nicked. There are also some scratches too. They are all at the kids’ hand height.
The paint was Zinsser 123 latex primer, 2 coats and sanded. The topcoat is 2 coates of Behr semigloss white. I’ve sinced switched to Sherwin Williams Superpaint as my paint of choice.
I want a more durable finish.
– Will Sherwin Williams superpaint be more durable?
– Is there a more suitable, i.e. durable paint?
– Can I put 1-2 coats of Minwax water-based poly over it to strengthen it?

For durability you want to move away from latex paint. Oil based paint is likely to be much more durable. It is true that the best acrylic paints are getting better, but oil based enamel is still the standard of comparison. Top coating with a high quality waterborne clear coat such as those from Target or Fuhr may be an improvement over the latex enamel.
It is also not clear that any coating can stand up to the ravages of active kids. Just plan to remodel after they have headed for college, if there is any money left.
