I’m realizing that for these display cases I’m making, which will house baseball players’ jerseys, I probably should move to a water-based system so I don’t have to wait forever for the finish to cure. Must be sure there’s no aroma contaminating the jerseys.
That being said, what stain and finish sequence/products would you recommend? I’ve not done any water-based finishing yet. I have two cases to make in red oak, and one in Alder, for which I want to use a gel stain to minimize blotching.

For the inside of piece that will contain cloth idems all I ever use is shellac. Drys fast and no odor.

Yea shellac or a good poly, use a sanding sealer first. I like the enduro coat wb system. http://www.compliantspraysystems.com they have everything from stain to sealer.... Oh yea are you spraying or brushing?
At Darkworks cut to size made to burn......Putty isnt a option
Brushing, or even more desireable, wiping. It'll be a long time before I can get into the whole HVLP thing.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
forest_girl,
I just finished a pair of walnut end tables using Jeff Jewitt's analine dye, zinzer's (sp?) unwazed amber shellac, followed by Fuhr 355 acrylic varnish (brushed on) and all I can say is wow, what a combination! The analine dye was mixed with denatured alcohol so I wouldn't have to sand down after staining, the shellac really brought out the beauty of the walnut (and sealed the dye from the finish coat), and the Fuhr acrylic varnish brushed on like a dream. It went on so well that it looked like it had been sprayed - and you can put quite a few coats of it on in one day.
I posted a picture a while back, but it really ddidn't do justice to the finish.

Thanks Terry, I'll check out the stain options for your scenario. Congrats on such a great project!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
