My first thought would be to use a product called BarKeepers Friend. It's a weak form of wood bleach. Use only a small amount and wash it off after a minute or two. Start slowly and increase the amount of powder if you don't like the result. If that is not satisfactory then go to the hardware store for wood bleach (oxalic acid). Start with a little and increase the amount until it lightens the stains to the shade you like. If its too light touch it up with dilute stain. This is bound to be an art project and not a cut and paste one.
Good luck.
Thank you very much for your reply and information.
Are you sure it's just a water stain? It looks like the wood may have a little rot. It also looks like it hasn't been sanded. Try that first. If it is rot, it likely won't sand out.
I got it out in the end by putting it through a thickness planer a few times the board was slightly thinner than I hoped for originally in the end but it got rid of the mark.
It looks like rot to me, too.
I ended up putting the board through a thickness planner to get rid of the mark so the board ended up being thinner then I’d planed for but it solved the issue.
