My shop flooded recently and I had four small mahogany tabletops sanded to 240, standing on end, and ready to finish. I was able to get most of my work out of the water after a few minutes, even so these tops all have signs of water stains along the edge. It is pretty ofvious to the naked eye on one, not so much on the rest.
The question is, how much more prep work do I need to do prior to finishing? I had thought in terms of starting the sanding back at 180 and then finishing up with the 240, paying special attention to that edge that got wet. If it makes a difference, I plan to stain, apply linseed oil, fill the grain, and then finish with spray lacquer before rubbing out.

Can you re-create the stains on some scrap? That way you will be able to test and experiment.
Yes, That was my first thought, but my finishing process takes several days between some of the steps. I was hoping to get started this weekend.
