Howdy Sir,
I’m making a sofa table w/ a 2″ thick solid hard maple table top.
I’ve carved out an 8″ diameter bowl into the top.
At it’s deepest the bowl is about 1 1/4″ deep.
Is there any way to make that bowl water-tight?
The customer wants it to be able to hold water for flowers.
I didn’t think there was any way to do it,
but I thought I’d ask you first before telling her I couldn’t do it.
I was thinking maybe salad bowl finish or even an epoxy.
What do you think?
Thank you,
Victor

Victor,
That certainly is an interesting concept.
Forget the salad bowl finish. I think epoxy would be the next step. If you can have someone spray a polyester finish, that might be another way.
I doubt it will be painted but if it was you could use a marine paint that is good below the water line.
Just remember, for everything you get you give up something. For an absolutely water tight finish, if something becomes comprimised, you're faced with removal as opposed to repair.
Let me know what you decide to do.
Peter
