Can you put waterbased finishes over an oil based finish,.Likewise, can you put an oil based finish over a waterbased finish. I have been told that you can do both but that you should seal with shallac before the final finish

Yes, yes, and yes. Use dewaxed shellac. Probably have to order it since most paint stores look at you funny when you ask for super blonde dewaxed shellac flakes. Garret Wade, Lee Valley, & others carry. If you have a Woodcraft store nearby, they might actually stock it on the shelf. What you're talking about comes in real handy when you use, for instance, a water based pore filler and an oil based varnish.
Thank you for your reply. I have some more questions. I have shellac flakes, both orange and de-wax. Why do you say dewax? I know that you must put de-wax under polyurethane but why under varnish or water base? I generally always put a coat of 1 lb cut de-wax shellac under all finishes
wax = nostickum
then your finishes bond real nice for a little bit, and you rub the table down, and "Look, ma, cellophane!"
