Mineral spirits works well for general cleaning and wax removal.
J.P.
Thank you JP as sring is right around the corner an the honey do list is starting to grow.
wouldbe,
As JP suggests, mineral spoirits will do the trick. Most often I satart with soap and water. A little Ivory bar soap, shaved into warm water, and stirred around. Wipe the surface, then immediately wipe dry.
If this doesn't do the trick, then give the mineral spirits a try. Can also use turpentine, or naptha to remove wax. Start out with a Q-tip, in an inconspicuous area. If there is nothing on the surface but wax, you will be removing everything. This is more likely to occur in high wear areas, where the old varnish has been worn away, and the wax is all that's there, but I have seen old tabletops that were an "oil and wax" finish but hadn't been oiled, only waxed, for decades. A light touch may be in order. Keep turning the cloth or paper towel you are using, and replace it often, to pick up the solvent with the dissolved wax.

Ray Pine
Thanks Ray As I told JP the honey do list is starting to grow an now I can start to clean my 60 year old dining room set.
