Can you make some general recommendations for waxing over either Danish oil or an oil-based lacquer? What waxes work best? Are some waxes best for light duty areas and others for heavy duty areas? Is an electric buffer necessary? Is there a reference on this subject?

The various waxes available are all very similar. The basic difference is whether it's a paste wax or semi paste wax.
The paste wax is more of a solid product and the semi's are more liquid (like warm butter)
Trewax and Butchers are hard waxes that are high in carnauba and will give you a high shine when used with a buffer. You have to be careful when buffing wax as it will buff off if the heat gets too high.
Fiddes, Goddards, Briwax etc are examples of semi paste. They come in a variety of colors also.
Please don't find this self serving but I wrote an article in FWW ( June issue) on waxes. You might find it helpful.
