Well folks it has been a long day here at Camp Knots but we are finally back to “normal.” You will see we have refreshed the design and the navigation. Most importantly our forum/folder structure has changed based upon all of your feedback.
As always if you have any questions or problems please don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected]. Again, thanks for all your patience today!

Hey jazzdog,
You copied my quote by Gil Bailie or it was a coincidence? I think it is an awesome quote. Regards,

Hi Buzzsaw,
I wasn't aware that you were using it: I appended it to my signature after I read "Wild at Heart" last year.

Jazz,
I was just joking. I saw the quote elsewhere and I loved it and have been using it for a while. So it was a coincidence. You have good taste...Regards,

One thousand thankyous.
But I assume the profile section is still to be adjusted?

How do I avoid having to go through the front door so as to miss the items of no interest to me, i.e., the pay per view (PPV) stuff and get straight to the area that does have items that attract my attention, i.e., the forums?
I've tried tinkering about with bookmarks but, one way or another, I always seem to end up getting redirected through those annoying PPV bits. Slainte.

Richard, try this as your Knots URL:http://forums.taunton.com/fw-knots/messages?redirCnt=1
Not at all sure it will work; won't know until I go to a different computer (at work) but it's worth a shot.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I tried that link FG. It took me to a page saying that an error occurred and I had to do a bit more clicking to get to the forums.
I guess we're snookered with having to wade through the advertising and links you can't access unless you stump up money to read. There's no chance of getting me to pay for it though, ha, ha.
Thanks for trying anyway. Slainte.Richard Jones Furniture
Richard, that is the link that I have always used- it opens automatically when I click for internet, and I have it in my favourites as an alternative. Try it again, as soon as the error message comes up hit' back' and click it again- sometimes the time taken to find the address exceeds the limit that has been set.Philip Marcou
Ah, philip! With a bit of tinkering that does seem to work. Thanks to both you and FG for the help.
I don't think I could have stood having to slog through all the PPV stuff every time to get here, ha, ha. Slainte.Richard Jones Furniture
Richard, its just another popup ad on the internet. The look is better but I am once again a newbie with "0" posts-4th time now I think. A bornagain woodworker.......or is that roadkill on the information superhighway......errr live roadkill (someone please finish him off). So here we are once again are we gonna have fun? aloha to all and welcome back. mike
Hello Richard,
As was pointed out to you the best way to access the forums is through this book mark: http://forums.taunton.com/fw-knots/messages. If you are getting sent to PPV content then something is amiss and I will need to dig deeper into this.
It does appear that we are having some sort of redirect issue with the login page as some users are getting sent to the contact customer service page. We are investigating this right now. More TK...

I assigned http://forums.taunton.com/fw-knots/messages as my home page, but it doesn't "stick." It gets changed, right there in my IE home page address box to http://www.taunton.com/fwn/Community/CommunityHome.aspx .forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Well this is most puzzling. We are not doing any kind of redirects to the forums.taunton.com address so how it is changing to http://www.finewodworking.com site is beyond me. Very strange. What happens when you go to http://forums.taunton.com/tp-breaktime ???? Let me know.
Hi Mark. I thought I'd got it licked and I could jump straight into the Forum from my Favourites. However, I've found that only sometimes does the link you provided work that way. Sometimes it doesn't and takes me to a Taunton covering page that say's there's been an error.
Then I have to click on the Woodworking button in that page and have a wee traipse through the woodworking PPV page that appears next. Having said that I now know where the Knots discussion button is on the PPV page and zoom away to the forums-- luckily I'm on broadband at this end, so it's pretty swift.
It looks like one or two others are experiencing similar idiosyncratic behaviour, so I guess it's not just me. Anyway, it's not the end of the world, just a bit odd and slows me down as I flash in and out of Knots. Slainte.Richard Jones Furniture
OK now I see what is happening. Yes there is a problem with the Autologin page that is causing some users to get the error processing page. When this happens click on the link again and you should get right in. We are hoping to have this issue resolved either today or first thing in the morning... I will keep you posted. -Mark
Mark,
When I attempt to click on the URLs provided in the form of notifications from Taunton (as with the notification I received to 29305.25, above), the result has consistently been an error message since the format revision.

"Don't ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and go do that, because what the world needs is people who have come alive." Gil Bailie
Yes I have been able to duplicate this problem as well. It has to do with an Autologin setting. Try clicking the link a second time and it should bring you through to the discussion. If that does not work, try this: hit the logout button then confirm logout then click on the link again and you will be asked for login info and you should be passed onto the discussion. Let me know if that works/doesn't work for you. -Mark
Thanks for the reply. I'll keep at it and let you know if it continues to go toes-up.

Was able to sneak into Knots through Breaktime, now that does'nt even work....
Richard,
Same thing happens to me, it's not just you. Maybe it's the Whitbread that's spilled between the buttons on the keyboard? Just a thought...

Just to confirm, so that I'm not missing things, we are now back to just five or so folders, all under "Community"? I really appreciated the greater classification of content, as you seem to have done with the other top level folders in dark blue I see in the header (Skills & Techniques, Tool Guide, ...).
I think you have created a great reference source with the folders and subfolders on the FineWoodworking.com header at the top of my monitor. Certainly, it requires accurate placement of content with so many subfolders to make the classification worthwhile, and occasionally users would post threads in the wrong folder in Knots, but that was to their detriment. It would be wonderful to have the same subfolders under Knots as are under the top level folders in the header.
In the current reincarnation of the original layout, if I check the Knots discussions every other day I have to expand most of the folders in turn to see all the new content. Because the order of appearance of the folders keeps changing, I also have to keep track of the folders I have already expanded and checked? This makes the forum harder to use.
My two cents. Thanks for listening.

Don, there is an option to Show discussions 2 days back. Does that help??
Re: all the different forums of the last incarnation of Knots, while those did give us some great precision (if and when people posted in the most relevant forum and folder) there one major glitch: if you wanted to search for a thread you vaguely remembered, or just a subject of interest, you had to search each forum separately. This was a fatal flaw, IMHO, in the last structure of Knots. forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Doesn't look like it. When I changed to "last 2 days" I lost a thread with an April 7 date. When I clicked the forum title, it showed that and another post from April 7 that were not in the default initial list. Not sure if the day count is simply using calendar dates or going back 48 hours, ... from current clock time.Second, I am confused by the display options. The default is "unread messages". If I choose "last 2 days" is that just unread messages from the last two days, all messages posted in the last two days, ...Perhaps sysop can clarify or point me to help screen that will make clearer for a mid-50's, sometimes too literal guy.
The 2 days back option shows all messages, not simply unread messages, near as I can tell. The ones with a yellow star are your unread ones. (Although right now, the system doesn't remember "read" messages from before the change).
I seem to remember from the last revision that it took awhile for all the indexing to catch up. NOt that I know exactly what "indexing" is, but you get the drift.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Ahhhh, much better! Problem today, though: When I click on Show discussions of high interest I'm not getting anything posted before today. Is that going to get "caught up" next week? Hope so!
forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I'm glad that Knots has been "renewed and improved". The sleep deprivation you and your crew went through was worth it to us.
A question. Is there a way for me (Firefox if that matters) to fix the folders in an order that doesn't change position when I post or expand one of the minimized ones? They jump to the top of the column on the left which means scrolling down through the ones that I've had a look at already.
Thank you, this is much better
Be safe,
Dennis
Nice work.. I'm old and supprised me a 'bit'..
I thought I was in the wrong place!
Where is the link to breaktime, Over the fence,Gatherings-Etc.?
Look at the dark red bar in the lighter red background, top center of the screen. "Other Taunton forums;"
When I get an email notification that I have a message, I get an error when I click it. One of the messages was from Saturday morning, so it was definitely after the changeover. Are the email notification links broken?
I got an email link today (Monday) that worked. So either things had to settle in, or something has changed for the better since Saturday. My goal is for my work to outlast me. Expect my joinery to get simpler as time goes by.
Nicely done guys! I was one of the big bashers of the previous format, so I would like to chime in and give you guys some props for the new format.
Keep up the good work.
Tim
Testing the fix we made to the Autologin issue. Please stand by...
Edited 4/11/2006 10:34 am ET by SYSOP
OK folks we have put a fix for this "error processing issue" out on the site. Please let me know ASAP if this is still a problem for you. Thanks -Mark
Geez, I really hate to bring it up, but once I got used to the old "new" version, with separate tabs for each discussion, I liked it more.
Beating my own personal drum (or horse) here: Did you ever try to search for anything under the last system? If you didn't know which forum it was posted in, it was a total loss (unless you had the time to search each one separately). forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I have to admit, I did not search in the last system.
I got used to it, though.
"I got used to it though." That puts you in an elite class -- quite a few folks just gave up. I tried, and tried, and tried, as my general attitude toward change is to be patient. But it sucked, IMHO. I can now log in and check for "Unread messages to me" in less than 10 seconds. Love it! Haven't ventured to a search yet, but at least it only has to be done in one place.
Best of luck getting used to the new old knots.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
