I made a large spokeshave with a Lee Valley hardware and blade kit, now I’m making a smaller curved one. I would like to have a harder wear plate than the wood, any ideas? I was thinking of ivory, mother of pearl or corian….. Ebony? And I was just going to epoxy it in. Any thoughts??? It needs to be soft enough to machine and smooth with wood tools, I just want it harder and slicker than the wood… the pictures are of the first one I made. Thanks

Why not make it out of brass to match the other one? Brass is easily cut with everyday woodworking tools. Your local library will probably have a couple of books on basic metal working. If they don't then ask to have something through inter-library loan.
Another material that works well as a wear plate is bone. I used it to make a wear plate on one of my straight spokeshaves. I epoxied it in place. It works well.
