I recall this question being asked a while back, but could not find the thread.
How can one weather a new section of cedar fencing to match an existing, nicely weathered section?
I thought the answer involved a simple mixture of household chemicals (vinegar? steel wool? pool cholorine?)
Thanks,

Maybe steel wool in vinegar and then you paint it on after letting it sit a couple of days.
I'd go for honesty - leave it and let it weather to the same look. Often, when you prematurely age a pice to look like older wood, it gets too dark later when it really gets old.
That puts me in mind of a tale that a Caltrans soil engineer once told me. When he first got his job right out of college; he was tasked with analyzing the 101 south new construction south from san Francisco to the airport. He recommended building a roller coaster-like road since the soils under the freeway would settle differentially. After about two years, the freeway would be flat forever.
Caltrans wasn't about to build a roller coaster of a freeway no matter how wise the advice. They built it flat.
Now, 101 to the airport is a roller coaster road and has been for 20 years, and it will be until it gets rebuild again unless the politicians again out vote the engineers.
Interesting anecdote. About the fence: I wodner how long it will take for the new cedar to match the old stuff, because right now, there is a huge variation! Thanks, though, and I'll keep this in mind.
Hi 6 miles, I was faced with somewhat the same problem in building my cedar deck. Couldn't seem to find the time what with other house building activities to get it all finished at the same time. Some of the railings were six months later than the beginning, however now after one summer of sun it's all the same color and looking great, take heart, nature will look after you.
Dale.
Great, I'll let nature take its course. Thanks for everyone's help.6milessouth
