I am in the process of installing a fireplace mantle made of a rough cut, well weathered pine beam which was dried out of doors and has a beautiful gray, weather appearance. When I cut the beam to the proper length I will expose at least one end of bare wood. Is there anything on the market that I can apply to the cut end to cause it to gray out so that it has the same appearance as the rest of the mantle?

Do your experiments with the cutoff piece. I've never done this with pine so I don't know how it will react, but weathered effects gcan sometimes be gotten by using strong ammonia, and also with NaOH solution (not together). Last resort - gray stain.

Experiment with some spray on oven cleaner. I have used it successfully for this effect on pine. Follow the warnings on the label and wear eye protection. If you are going to leave it unfinshed you shouldn't even need to neutralize it afterward.
