Hi All,
I am building 3 gates with frame and panel construction and want to use a wedge in the tenons. The through mortises are 5 1/2″ deep and the tenons ate 5/8″ thick by 1 3/4″ wide. Hopefully the fit should be tight without them but for extra security, I though a wedge might be appropriate. What is the ration of length to width for the cut out in the tenon?
Many Thanks.

ratios
I don't know that there is a "standard" ratio for wedged tenons. But, it sounds like your frame may be a little thin for a wedged tenon to be a good idea. You might be better off by adding "insurace" by using through pins (drawbore-style), rather than wedges.
Why are you tenons so thin?
If your rails and stiles are 5 1/2" wide, why are you cutting your tenon width down to 1 3/4"? The joint would benefit from being wider, and you could wedge if you want, 3/4" in from top and bottom, without worrying about it.
