I have several spools of band saw blades which I need to cut to length and weld. I have a friend who is a welder attempt to TIG the blade but to no avail. I believe at one time blades could be brazed. Any ideas on how to weld these??
Thanks….

Timing is everything. Go get the current Shopnotes (#86). There is an article on that very subject. Mine came in the mail Saturday.

It's called siver brazing. Electric blade welders fuse the steel together and run several hundred dollars and are typically found on metal working bandsaws.

Still better to have then welded by someone else. Does your local saw shop do this???
You can cut the blades with snips or a dremel tool. Braze the ends with silver solder. You can buy 1/4" wide silver solder tape and flux from a number of woodworking outlets. I bought mine from Grizzly. The tape and flux go a long way, you are only using a piece the width of the blade for each brazeing.
I could describe how I do it, but there are websites that show you how,do a search for brazing bandsaw blades with silver solder.

There are two basic methods-butt welding the ends by electric arc welding or silver soldering.
The easiest and qickest is the butt weld, but this requires the actual welder. Metal shop bandsaws often have these as part of the machine, so if you have engineering connections that is the way.But this is not as strong as the silver solder way, which requires that the ends be skived, and it needs a little finesse. Any good saw doctoring shop should be able to do either.
My saw at school (metalworking) has a welder on it. Welding blades is a type of resistance welding followed by annealing and grinding smooth. Annealing relieves the stresses and without it the blade will soon break. Its a fairly simple process and I bet if there is a school with one, someone would weld your blades for you - I know that I have.
There are silver solder kits available for bandsaw blades. The hard part is fitting the two ends of the blade perfectly. You need to file a scarf joint on the ends. Any mis-alignment or extra solder will be evident as the blade ticks through the guides. If the joint isn't perfect, the blade will break at the joint.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
