Tonight I picked up an old Delta lathe for $40. The label says Delta Double duty lathe but we didn’t find a model number anywhere, it is all-metal no plastic at all.
It can turn up to 11″ over the bed and about 36″ between centers. It also has ability to turn outboard.
It has 2 bearings in the headstock just like the needle bearings in the front end of a rear drive car.
It came with a 3″ face plate that fits the inboard end of the shaft & an 8″ face plate that fits the out board end of the shaft & large toolrest & a small tool rest & one of those steady rests for turning long thin spindles so the won’t wobble in the center. It isn’t big & fancy with all the foofra like some of the fancy lathes today but is real solid & uses step pulleys. I have a 1720-RPM 3/4-hp motor to put on it & plan to make hollow ends for the stand that I can fill with sand for ballast to weigh it down.
Man now I gotta go take my temperature I think I feel a turning fever coming on.

In lieu of all the money you saved as opposed to a new lathe, go buy plenty of aspirin. Take two with lots of water and get to work. Bowls are expected by dinner tomorrow nite!
Congratulations..

Take the money you saved, and buy a good chuck with all the little attatchments. You'll be really glad you did. And practice, practice, practice with your skew!

You probaly caught it already, but I think Mark's message #3 is directed to you. Are the bowls ready, making the salad now..grin>

Bart,
I really feel sorry for you guy. I hate to be the one to break the news, but if there's no model number, it's a fake. Don't despair. Charity and pity move me to make things better for you. Just send that old, crappy, out-dated, scratched, heavy Leviathan Lathe to me, and I'll not only get rid of it for you, I'll even send you a brand new, unscratched, state of the art, Delta Midi Lathe including a genuine model number, serial number, and GUARANTEE!!! (Shiny new plastic parts included.)
Don't let false humility hold you back; I'd really like to help.
Jeff
