Hi all,
I am building a Roubo style workbench out of hard maple. I’d like to use wenge for the drawbored pegs which will go through the mortise and tenon joinery. Curious if the use of wenge raises a red flag for any of you? I would use the straightest grain possible but my concern is that wenge may be too brittle and could splinter going through the offset joints. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
– Kristopher

Split the wenge to make sure your pegs are truly straight-grained and point them with a pencil sharpener. I would make a test joint to see if they hold up to the offset under the hammer. Wax or adjust the offset if they collapse under pressure. I used brass rods pointed with a belt sander to draw bore my bench.
Thanks _mj_, a test joint sounds like a safe way to go. Brass rod is a cool idea too.
