I splurged a bit this weekend. I went out and bought the following: Makita 3″X21″ model 9903 belt sander, Porter Cable 895PK router kit, and a Forrest Woodworker II blade. After reading a lot about belt sanders as well as wanting to get a good router (I have 2 Ryobis), especially a plunge router, I decided on the above. This forum really helps me learn how to spend my money wisely. Also, 2 weeks ago I picked up a Vega fence for my old Craftsman and I’m loving that. Oh, yeah, I also spent $275 on some white ash for a dining room table that I am building.
With the Porter Cable 895PK kit there was a rebate to send in to get a “free” D-Handle for the routers. I think I spent my money wisely. I got the router kit from Rockler and with 10% off I paid $240 for it and I will also be receiving the D-Handle in about 8-10 weeks. I bought it in NH where there is also no state tax. I paid $197 for the 9903 belt sander but I also get a 15% gift card to use at the store (Brentwood Machinery in Brentwood, NH) in the next year. So, in essence, I could’ve got it through Amazon for $170 but I paid the above and I have a $30 gift card. So I have the sander to use now instead of waiting to receive it in the mail. I’m a happy camper…

Buzz,
Now, how about the other part of the story? Did you go down stairs at Brentwood? Any memorable old iron down there these days?....
You know BG I didn't go down there but should've. Probably better off I didn't because my pockets were getting a little bare by then. I do have to go back sometime soon to redeem my $30 gift card. What do you think of the personnel there? There is one guy who I really like(an older slight gentleman) and he has always helped me. But there are others there who I get the feeling that unless I'm spending big bucks they really don't want to help out. I did notice that on Thursday nights they are open until 7:00PM which is good for me. I wish I could help you out on what was down there but didn't mosey down there this time. It is strange because I always go down there. I was a little rushed that day now that I recall...Regards,

Buzz,
I have not purchased much from them, it's just a nice stop for me when I go up near there to buy wood. It's a nice change from the woodcraft/rockler stores...where everything is bright, shiny and shrink-wrapped.
That dining table looks great. Have you decided how you'll do the bends?
Yes, that was what I was referring to when I was talking about the bending form. I built it out of particle board (6 pieces screwed together) after being routed using a circle jig. I'm using layers of wacky wood glued and veneer glued together and clamped on the form. Will do that twice for both sides. This was why I wanted to do this table...If I think of it I will post a picture of the form and what it looks like with all of the clamps attached (40 in all)...Regards,

Buzz: Enjoy!! Buying new stuff is so much fun, I feel sorry for the negatoids who can't enjoy things; always looking for something negative to say about people enjoying hobbies, having fun shopping etc. Could be that I live in Berkeley Ca. where having any disposable income is a sin unless you donate it to some goo-goo charity. My shop and my lumber rack are full to overflowing and I just bought a new SUV; that will use up my disposable income for ever or so it seems.
What is the new table design? Duke

Duke,
This is the exact table I am building. It is from a book on Dining Tables published by Taunton Press. http://www.cotswoldfurniture.com/catalog/function/diningroom/?id=18Regards,

The real reason I wanted to do this table is because I have never done a bent lamination before, which is required for the curved aprons. The main reason is we want a wooden dining room table though (currently a glass top on a plastic bottom). I just finished working on the bending form this past weekend and now it's on to using wacky wood, glue, and veneer for the aprons and a whole lot of clamps. This should be fun...Regards,

Great, But now is the really hard part. Just how do you hide these things from SWMBO? There is that physical part of it, and then there is the financial part of it. Just in case - do you have a nice warm place some where else, with soft pillow? Congratulations!
I was thinking of hiding them, believe me. But, I ended up bringing them right in the front door. Hey, most of the things I build using these tools are for our house. So, without them, no new furniture. It is what it is...:-)Regards,

(I have 2 Ryobis), especially a plunge router
I have a several I use every day.. REALLY nice routers for the price.
Plunge is NOT exact repeat.. Well, I'm a metal worker and fixed that... Just the bushings and rod needed a bit of.. Finess?
For the money HARD to beat with a bit O' work!
