   Gilmer Wood is in Portland, OR. This is a great place to lust after wood. And, bonus, Portland is a very nice city to visit.

   If you're up for driving another 4.5 hours north (from Portland), you could visit Edensaw in Port Townsend, WA.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)

   In Portland:

   Gilmer Wood Company was already mentioned, and they are a good place to go. 2211 NW Saint Helens Rd, Portland

   Crosscut Hardwood has a good variety of hardwoods. 3065 NW Front Ave, Portland.

   If you want to lust after a whole lot of Black Walnut, Goby Walnut has moved to Portland, on 5315 NW St. Helens Rd. They do have some other woods also, but the vast majority of their stock is Black Walnut and they have a lot of that.

   All three of these are in the same part of Portland, perhaps a couple miles of each other.

   If you're a bit farther out, I've always wanted to visit Northwest Timber (http://www.nwtimber.com/), but haven't made it there yet. I'm not finding a quick address at this moment.

   Northwest is in Jefferson, according to the website. That's fairly close to our northernmost point on the trip, witch is Coos Bay, on the coast. The website looks very tempting, and worth a little side trip.

   Sounds like you're not coming very far north into Oregon.  Unfortunately, all the places listed are in the northern half of the state.

   However, from Ashland, you can hope east over the mountains to K-Falls, and hit up Cook Woods (http://www.cookwoods.com/).  A sample:

   There's a retired shop teacher just outside Stockton, CA, who has a business called The Woodsman.  He specializes in cutting & drying orchard and urban trees, so has tons of walnut, cherry, magnolia, etc.

   Unfortunately, The Woodsman is pretty much out of business.   He stopped cutting lumber several years ago.

   Perfect...we'll be on HWY 101, about 6 or 7 miles from Whitethorn. I'll give it a try, and then I'll let you know what I think. They have claro walnut, which is one of the species I'm looking for.
