I’d like to start carving bowls (and other projects) and am trying to source some wood here in Western Colorado. Unfortunately we just lost our local lumber mill.
I’d like to find some kind of fruit wood, cedar, or even cottonwood – green or dried. (I think that fruit wood should be available in this area of many fruit orchards.)
Any tips on finding local wood? With the local lumber mill closed, the big box Home Improvement stores are no help. Do you order your wood online?
Thanks,
John

Should be a lot of beetle kill wood available.
There is some beautiful beetle kill wood - a little bit of it is sitting in my garage for a future project. Much of it is Douglas fir so maybe not great for carving.
Thanks!
Hi John,
This will bump up your request and hopefully you will get some suggestions. I believe you infer you live on the western slope, are you near Fruita or GJ? There must be a dead peach tree or two laying around there. Drive around and look for some downed trees. I live back east and you can usually find some blow down wood somewhere without looking very hard. Good luck.
Grand Junction.
Peach, cherry, apricot is just what I'm looking for - but those are in orchards and the orchardist might not take kindly to me wandering through their property.
But I know they trim or remove trees - I just don't know who gets those. It's just a matter of connecting with the right person.
Thanks
Do you have tree trimming services there?
John, How about tamarisk? (Forgot that one.) Should be available and easy to get.
Wow, you're right about the tamarisk being widely available?
I wonder if it can be used for anything? Caning (as for chairs, not knuckles)?
(For those not from the area, tamarisk is an invasive weed that takes over wet areas.)
