I voted, but I use IE at home and NS at work....
Firefox on Macintosh

I use Opera by choice (used to be Netscape by choice, but these sites keep crashing my Netscape). Also use IE a lot, often forced into it by stupid sites that are optimised it....but I hate it. I just hate it. I dislike all Microsoft software. A lot. cabinetmaker/college instructor. Cape Breton, N.S
I was in the computer business all my working life and have seen the love/hate relationships with Microsoft since their first operating system was introduced. But, I have never been able to explain it????? I think it might be another right brain/left brain thing. In my shop, some people loved Sun Unix and of course hated Microsoft. And, vice versa. I think it would make a hell of a paper for a thesis.
PlaneWood by Mike_in_KatyPlaneWood
Mike, what an argument/thesis it would be too! I love Unix because I like to tinker. When I want simple and clean I go with Microsoft's OS's. In midrange and main frame systems its pretty tough to beat the IBM OS's. Each have their own merits in their environments. Keeping an open mind and taking advantage of their individual merits is how we build highly optimized systems.
So, that's what these surveys (systems analysis) are about. Find out what people are using and optimize the system based on the users needs. In this case the end user is either a customer or potential customer. Keep as many people happy and comfortable as possible without adversley affecting the profit ratio and your marketing tool (this website) is a success. Steve - in Northern California
Mark,
I voted but, a question like this gets me to worrying.....especially in view of The Move. Why do you ask?
Dano
Dano,
I ask because I am collecting data on what you all use out there, so that we can better serve you. I am working with Proserpo on some enhancements which we hope to release in the upcoming weeks and I just want to be sure that we have all bases covered. MarkSYSOP
Mark,
Thanks for the reply. Are these "enhancements" going to replicate the "old" site.? ;-)
Dano"Form and Function are One" - Frank L. Wright
Dano,
Are they going to replicate the old site? In a word no. But they are things that you all have requested. One of them being increased picture space. I hope to be releasing that one very soon, maybe as early as next week.
MarkSYSOP
If you want to better serve us here are a couple of suggestions:
1. The main topics should be in the same order, always, regardless of when a posting was made.
2. Within a main topic the order of posts should always be chronological, BY THE ORIGINAL POSTER (like the old version).
Thank you.
Ben,
Thanks for the input, we are working on some solutions similar to what you ask and will hopefully have something in the upcoming weeks to release to you.
MarkSYSOP
Right now I am using Opera 6.0. I also use Netscape 4.78 as well as Mozilla (I forget what version). I don't like Microsoft. And YES, I think they should be broken up.
I have been using IE 5 but am downloading and switching to Firefox by Mozilla. Too many spyware nasties on the net for my continued use of Microsoft browsers.

Yeah, but if schools (like the one I'm in right now) use Microsoft Int Exp (like I do here), then I think Firefox has a long way to go, but what is computer software talk doing in a WW forum?

Sure sounds like you guys ought to consider revising your site to be a little more Firefox-friendly... Get rid of that ActiveX business! Isn't there something else that allows the formatting functions with Firefox?"Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler." A. Einstein

SYSOP,
Oh, how embarassing! I didn't even notice that the thread was started in 2002. I saw it as a current topic and took it as an active poll.If I had seen Danford C. Jennings, I would have known something was off!

Firefox.
Web sites should be browser independent though. There's nothing more aggravating than hitting a web site that has been "optimized" for one browser (which is a nice way of saying it uses nonstandard stuff that makes it broken on most browsers).

Firefox
Mozilla - on the recommendation of my service provider to speed up interaction with secure sites. My ISP is a bi-directional satellite-based service. The actual data transfer rate is slower than DSL or cable but with various acceleration techniques, using Mozilla among them, the apparent speed is close to the DSL I previously used. Other benefits that I have noticed are that pop-ups are easier to manage and incidence of e-mail SPAM is lower.

To NY and everone,
I see posts like this all the time regarding issues with IE. I have XP Home with IE6, have kept up with all the updates, etc., and have no problem with any sites or with security. I also keep McAfee current with all virus protection, etc.
Note: I don't own any MS stock or anything, just a satisfied user. I've tried Firefox and found soem formatting issues even when standard HTML coding is used on a site.

Food for Thought: The Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.
Let me clarify my comment of firefox and why I use it. Have had a couple problems over the last couple years after getting the new puter. Got a virus once that was tricking my virus protection into thinking everything was ok, but this thing ran like molasses in January even with the broadband connection. Was not aware of the situation until I called Dell and spoke to a customer rep...he recommended Eanthology.com for my virus protection, I think I pay 5 bucks a month for continually upgraded virus protection and it works just like they say it will...anyway...(I'm computer illiterate BTW), my step daughter somehow managed to turn the virus protection one night and we started having problems.....called Eanthology and spoke to one of their reps as we started getting the worst bunch of pop ups and programs that would appear out of nowhere, including desktop icons almost every time we logged on. Anyone ever heard of ISearch?? It's bad news!! To make a long story short, the guy at eanthology recommended Firefox as IE was and still is having way too many problems.....since I started using FF I've had no problems at all, this thing runs great and I'm completely sold on their constant improvements to the site......I recommend it to all who hate the constant pop ups!! If you have any questions about the ISearch, I'll fill you in...just ask.......Hit 'em hard, hit 'em fast, SHOW NO MERCY!!!
there's a real easy way to get rid of ISearch.....and it costs nothing.....takes about 10 minutes of your time.....Hit 'em hard, hit 'em fast, SHOW NO MERCY!!!

I'm using an old Mac (9.2), and when I get into the OS X system, I intend to move to Firefox.
EDIT: I might add that I am not a Microsoft hater. But staying out of the Microsoft orbit seems to spare one of a lot of problems like viruses, spyware, etc. As far as Mozilla is concerned, I really don't know if it is any better than IE, but I like the format a lot better.
Microsoft is the target of a lot of antipathy in the computer world, and I prefer to stay as far from the bullseye as I can.

I use Mozilla Firefox. I use IE-6 only if I need to download something from Microsoft. DW uses Netscape, but this vote is for Mozilla.

Dear Mike,
Ok, now THAT"S scary!John
All,
Well thanks for the feedback on this, but I am not sure how this thread/poll got resurrected because I originally started this thread in May of 2002! So if you where confused as to why Safari wasn't listed well that's because it didn't exist when I asked the question. I was thinking about doing this poll again maybe I will start over.
I am a firm believer that all web pages should use the KISS principle.Keep It Simple StupidThat means:
1. Special features to one particular browser, no matter how nice, etc., MUST NOT BE USED!2. Only features, ANSII generic "Standard", should be used... with a little ingenuity, it can be done.3. Make your web pages so they can run on ALL browsers!
It has been said... "If it can run with the Opera browser, it can run on all of them."4. If the above are NOT done, you will be losing a prospective customer. That simple!IMHOLJ
"Ok, now THAT"S scary!"Maybe a tad scary, but it's all part of my plan to a get a PBS gig. I'm thinking that the "Super Dave Osborne of Woodworking" can fill a market niche for sure. First show could be "Swapping fence rails front to back, reversing the fence and working from the other side of the saw* -- just like having a power feeder, but without the expense." Maybe another show, "Mescaline, it's so much more than a morning shop pick-me-up." I don't know, I'm still in development here.*Attention neophyte woodworkers. I use firefox and IE 7 beta, but when I get a chance I get on a mac and use safari. I have to use a pc for work, but much rather use a mac. My pc is running style xp on it so I can make it 'look' like a mac running OS X panther. My older macs are so old ( they still run and go online) that the graphics these days take too long to load.

Good point, citrouille. I must agree with you.
Dear Cit,
I suppose that is true, hypothetically, with the exception of the headaches associated with "Windows". Once the "ifs" are removed the reality is that right now, Macs are relatively secure. Hey, they now offer the best(?) of both worlds, for you all that are into pain & frustration, you can now run "Windows" in a native environment, right on your Mac! You might even be able to buy stickers to cover up the Apple logo, so that your friends won't know!Best,John
