What did I do wrong? Shellac is start…

I had shellacked (what the hell is the past tense for shellac anyway) a walnut humidor I had built roughly 3 years ago. the top is veneered about 1/8 inch thick over mdf. the rest is solid. the top is showing cracks in a raking light. I cannot feal the cracks but I am starting to see them. I keep the humidor in my basement/workshop (my wife hates cigars). I also live in Boston Ma area and humidity changes like the weather. Should I have used lacquer instead? I do so love the look of orange shellac on walnut. Does anybody have any idea what I did wrong? thanks

Hi Richard,
I suspect the problem is with the thickness of the veneer. 1/8th is too thick for the glue to completely immobilize. The veneer is expanding and contracting and the shellac is not. If you like the color of the shellac then just consider the cracks as character, otherwise scrape to bare wood and use an oil/varnish finish - I like Waterlox.
Good Luck, Steve
