Hey all,
Discussion Forum
I am rescueing an old New England farmhouse. As I am going through, I am saving everything. My question is, what can I use old growth rough sawn pine planks that are only 3/8 -1/2″ thick? I also have old 1.5-2″ slices of trees (old growth) that I am saving that used to be wall framing.
I have been in the trades for quite awhile and built cabinets for a shop in NYC professionally. I have done carpentry for many years. But now, with this house, I am settling down and have really taken an interest in woodworking and trim carpentry (built ins and such also).
Anyway, I digress. I have considered laminating the boards together for thickness to use as various paneling/trim/ wainscoting around the house. I would try to get 3/4 out of it after plaining it down.
I would love some advice as what to save this wood for.
Matt
P.S. For any old house purists, this house was severely damaged by a tornado that went through western Massachusetts.

Thin material
How about using it for back panels on cabinets and such. Or, for boxes, lap desks, garden totes, etc. where the thin material would be appropriate?
What to do with this wood?
Hi there Matt, how are ya?
How wide are the planks that are only 3/8-1/2" thick?
I've always thought it would be awesome to use planks like that to either clad bulk heads and beams or to be turned into nice panels backed with something like ply, the mechanical bond of the adhesive on the back should be enough to minimise wood movement and would easily make the boards substantial enough for use in cabinetry etc...
Whilst 1/2" is not thick enough for much structural work it would have a nice depth of color and allow you to work it like real wood. Maybe even carve or etch some interesting pictures/patterns into it.
I'm afraid thats all I can think of for now but let me know how it goes and good luck.
