I am trying to install for the first time a compressed air rig to begin applying water based lacquer with a new conversion HVLP spraygun. I am uncertain as to what type of filters are best for this system. Do I need to install a coalescing filter in addition to a standard water filter? Thank you for this help. Hadley

Hadley,
What type of air compressor?
What air filter
I regret that I did not give enough information. I have three compressors---none of which are adequate singly to run the conversion spraygun. I have routed all three into an eighty gallon tank. In concert, they provide the volume and pressure required for my spraygun. One is a single stage two cylinder oil type , and the other two are 2 HP oiless type. I hope this is sufficient info. Thank you for your advice. Respectfully, Hadley
Good Insurance
Hadley,
A coalescing filter is typically the final filter in a system and it is designed primarily to capture the finest oil particles that have gotten by the coarser filter. They generally aren't called for in small spray systems but they are good insurance, especially since one of your compressors is an oil type. A coalescing filter should always be installed downstream from a conventional 5 micron filter.
