Making a Mahogany porch swing for my son. It is sealed with 3 coats of dewaxed shellac. What brand varnish would be best? It will occasionally get wet from rain and this is Houston with it’s high temps and humidity. HD and Lowes are conveniently close.
I have a gallon of Deft Poly, but I’m thinking I should probably use a spar varnish. Deft Poly don’t seem to fare to well outdoors down here although it has done great on our entrance door.

HD sells a minwax product called Helmsman: Spar Urethane.
Sure you don't want to use a wipe-on oil/varnish mix? It can be rubbed down and recoated every 3-4 years (depending on exposure), whereas the brushed on products, spar varnish or uethane, will deteriorate in not much more time, and then have to be stripped before you can recoat.
Well, I thought about using Tung Oil but no one around here sells the pure stuff and I have a mental block against the so-called Tung Oil Finishes

Settled on some Teak Oil. Nave no idea what's in it but apparently it's good for outdoors. Found it at Ace Hardware.

TEak oil works great. I used it on my boat for years. You might have to recoat evey cuople of months just to keep it fresh depending on weather etc.
I use teak oil on the wood trim and swim platforms on my boat. It is really good stuff! I do reapply every year, but it gets a TON of abuse on the boat. The swim platforms basically sit in the water all year long and when not in the water the are receiving DIRECT sunlight. The Teak Oil keeps them protected and looking good.
Cheers!

Mike, Murphy Bros. on Bissonnet near Kirby sell pure tung oil-- Olde English or Olde Masters is the brand. My memories of Houston suppliers and brand names are getting a bit hazy now. Finisher's Supply on Star (I think is the street) sell it too. Slainte.RJFurniture
Getting down that far east is at least an hour and a half through the most God awful traffic ever created! You haven't seen what their doing to I-10. Making it 22 lanes instead of 9. Projected finish date is 2010, I think. Till then I'll just use internet orders.
