I’m making a small desktop clock out of a manzanita root. Just an insert into a flat bandsawn face. I’ve seen some before with a very nice and smooth finish on the bandsawn face and I’d like to achieve something like that. Would appreciate any suggests.

there are two ways to achieve something like the effect you're trying to describe. the first is with Fiberglass resin. Mix up a batch and pour it over the face. let it harden and you have a clear smooth coating. practice on scrap first.
the second way is to spray several coats of clear gloss polyurethane letting each dry before lightly scoffing with 220 grit. it will take many coats.
Both look very "plastic" when done. It's not possible to get a deep rich luster on rough sawn.
