I just finished reading you new article about chisels and as a novice I really got a lot of information from the article, but I have a question on the Narex chisel you mention “The Beach handle, with a hoop and ferrule.”
Just what exactly is a “hoop?”

the hoop on a chisel is the metal ring near the top of the handle. It's purpose is to prevent the top of the chisel from smashing and breaking apart when being hit with a mallet over a period of time. Some chisels have a hoop, some don't.
