I’ve seen numerous references to BLO here on knots. What is it and what are the principal uses?
Sorry if this is a dumb question ;-}

Ram,
Boiled Linseed Oil.
It isn't really boiled. It is (raw) linseed oil to which metallic driers have been added to catalyze the polymerization process that results in the oil "hardening" into a finish. It may also be heat treated (but not boiled).
It is one of the least protective of all finishes, used alone, but is the basis for many combinations, including oil/varnish mixtures.
It is frequently used to develop color and figure in wood before other finishes are used.
Raw linseed oil is never used in wood finishing, but is the vehicle used in artist oil paints.
There are no dumb questions (except the ones unasked).

Re: "stupid" questions
As one of my mentors kindly said to me many years ago, "I'd rather answer your stupid questions, than clean up your stupid mistakes".
He was quite a softie (for a surgeon).Glaucon
If you don't think too good, then don't think too much...
Should have guess it, a Three Letter Acronym (TLA). ;-)
Thanks, -robert
