I’ve been meaning to ask for a while. Blue tape is often mentioned on the podcast and in FW videos.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen blue tape. But I live in Canada so maybe they don’t sell it here. All the painer’s tape that I noticed was green.
Is blue tape the same thing as green painter’s tape or is it something different?
Cheers,
Andrew

3M makes blue tape that has lower adhesion for delicate surfaces and better line definition, it comes at a premium but sometimes I prefer it to green tape.
I live in Canada and have bought blue tape many times check Home Depot.
Blue tape. I've tried to cheer mine up, to no avail.

I guess I never looked close enough at the shelf. What width do you find most useful? I'll get a roll to see whether it works better for me.
I use both, cheap tape for general purpose and good tape for freshly painted surfaces and finer detailing. I use a lot of masking tape.
Something you don't need unless you're a painter.
Or a boat owner ! Artist, hobbyist, craftsmen, cabinetmaker, home decorator...or when having to let the tape on for days outdoor.
I disagree & have used it plenty in the shop, most recently for folding and "clamping" long miters and coopered round glue-ups. The tape with texture in it is a bit more stretchy than the flat version for this kind of thing.
Somehow Chippendale et al. managed to do just fine without it.
Painters also managed without it and would not like to give it up now. Taking advantage of innovations to make life better is something many folks embrace.
He did not do mid century modern, that’s why. But along with Krenov, he is my inspiration.
Funny how some folks use the heck out of something and others couldn't care less. I have 2 drawers of tapes. In the green stretchy tape arena I have 1/8", 1/4" 1/2" and 3/4"; these were on purpose. Blue tapes in 3/4", 1" 1-1/2" and 2"; these were random. Transparent tape, double-sided tape, flat twine, UHMW tape, teflon tape, electrical tape, foam tape, packing tape, duct tape . . . I have dividers in the drawer and it is not super organized but, it is not a junk drawer either. I can reach in and grab what I want without digging.
John has a hammer problem, you have a tape addiction. Get help, both of you!
I don't use tape at all. I guess we each get one addiction.
Please don't say that, I would hate to have to choose...
GeeDubBee, no red tape ?
Most of the tape sold in NZ is green, but you can get blue scotch tape here so I just bought a roll to see if it is different.
uses:
-Sticking boards together temporarily either with a bit curled up, sticky side out or with CA glue between two bits.
-Marking out joints on hard to see bits a la Pekovitch. Worth the effort IMHO
-Temporary marks on finished parts for id
- clamping mitres and segmented turning pieces
About the only thing I hardly ever use it for is painting.
To another point; I order 1" blue tape from Rockler or FastCap. It isn't just for paint. It works just as well for defined edges with urethane and oils, too.

@Gulfstar - LOL, Apparently not.
Now you have me wondering if I developed the use of tape for so many things because a roll or two happend to be handy at some point early on. My addiction has crept up on me unawares. Maybe there is a division of Tool Addicts Anonymous that is specific to tape!?! I need help ;-)
