In the FWW 2008/2009 Tools and Shops issue there is an article by Joshua Finn where he builds a torsion box workbench using a product called “Homasote”. What is Homasote? I have never heard of it. Does it usually go by some other name? It looks a lot like MDF. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks…………..Toolmanmarv

Homasote is a common building material that has been around since WWII, maybe longer. It is made by pulping up recycled newspaper and then molding the mix into 1/2" thick 4' by 8' sheets. It is moderately soft and is the material behind the thin cork facing on bulletin boards. It is used in applications that need some firm padding or insulation.
Any lumber yard should be able to get it for you. A Google search will turn up lots of technical information about it.
