I shoulda known it would be the master of all info, Dunc who gets the answer. I bow , humbly, at your feet , Infomaster! So it is what is normally called rubber wood then. All that Chineese furniture seems to be made of it. Mission style furniture in parawood?....Kinda like Shaker furniture in particle board

I'm trying to find some pictures that show the grain of this wood, and in the process ran across this unfinished-furniture site, in case you haven't seen it:

Still looking for grain pictures. They say its density is equivalent to maple, and it has "fine grain." Might be the stuff some of the imported cutting boards are made of? Hmmmmm, off to searching....
PS: It's said to have a yellowish color and open grain like mahogany's.

Dense like maple and open pores like mahogany ...................sounds "interesting".
Hey fg,
Do you have a Cost Plus or Pier 1 Imports in your neck of the woods? They sell furniture made from it. You could take a look at it there. I bought some folding chairs from Cost Plus made of it. They hold up well. I called this stuff rubber wood for years. I heard it was made from rubber trees.
