What is the finish on this Cathedral door ?

HI folks
I recently visited Florence and came across some wonderful exterior carved wooden doors and was wondering if anyone has a good idea of what the finish (and wood) is? I’ve attached an image of some of the detail work.

Looks like coated with a oak-wood varnish, that's mostly uses for traditional and crafstman doors, see http://caldwells.com/exterior-doors/craftsman-doors for other type of door.
