Hard to tell on my phone, but it looks like walnut. Can you take a pic of the bark?
Maybe not the best photo but here’s what I got.
Doesn’t look like walnut bark. From the photos I’ve seen of Texas cedar wood this doesn’t look reddish enough either.
I've seen Texas cedar (actually juniper) that has that shape. The stuff I've seen has a more red/orange heart wood, not chocolate like that pic, though.
After looking up juniper I think you might be right. At least it looks very similar to it.
I don't think the color of the actual wood will help much in this case. It could have changed when it started oxidizing. The bark and shape are much more indicative. Not many species have that shape.
Hickory?
Juniper and walnut would both have a distinctive smell.
If it doesn't smell like Juniper, consider London Plane.
Is this local to where you are? Where is that?
My neighbor got it from a family friend in San jose
I am not sure but I have seen Mesquite that looks much like that. Including the bark. The shape also is indicative of Mesquite. In Chile, where I live there is a similar tree, the scientific name is Vachellia caven. It has that tortuous circumference and reddish center.
