All,
I’ve just finished applying a coupla coats of Danish oil on some cherry. Orginally I was going to apply a little dye and then several coats of shellac but I got anxious, and the danish oil was just sitting there…I have no patients.
Anyhow, my plan now is to apply several coats of oil and see what happens. However, I was wondering if I could apply some garnet schellac at this point, would it work? thanks

Different "danish oils" have different cure times, but the key to using any of them is to allow plenty of cure time and light coats. I have the same attention deficit with regard to finishing, so I generally just start another project between coats....
The amount of time between final oil application and the beginning of building shellac will vary, but I allow at least 72 hours; a week (or more) is better. When you seal with shellac, you block most solvent evaporation and almost all oxygen access (both will take place through the wood itself, but at a *very* slow rate). "Danish oil" is a generic name for an oil/varnish mix, and needs both to fully cure. Shellac alone matches my patience level much better, but oil can add a lot to the depth and color.
