I want to make Maple Face Frame kitchen cabinets. Should I use Maple Plywood or Birch ply for the carcase? The Maple ply is $125/sheet. What grade ply do you recommend.
Thanks,
Paul M

Pre-Finished.
I buy stuff locally for $75/sheet that is 3/4 and has 2 coats of aluminum oxide clear (same finish as pre-fin hardwood flooring) and that stuff is tough.
Saves a TON of finishing time too.
g'luck.

Hi Paul ,
The plywood for the interiors which is the majority you will use can be Birch or a shop grade of Maple or any others . You should use Maple for your finished ends and other parts of the cases that will show with the doors on .Also you can create frame and panel finished ends with 1/4" Maple for the panels , maybe to resemble the doors .
good luck dusty
if it's not visible when the doors are closed, I go with melamine for a couple of reasons. Not only does it stay nice and clean, but the white finish increases the visibility inside the cabinets. On top of that, it's pretty affordable as well.
For whatever is left that is visible I'd go with the aforementioned pre-finished maple because while birch is close it's still doesn't look like maple when it's finished.
pmc, look for prefinished maple from States Industries. In Hawaii it costs $77 wholesale and you ought to be able to do better than that on the mainland. There is no finishing required excet for the edges-awesome stuff. aloha, mike
Forget plywood boxes. Use Panolam Maple Melamine, looks like the real thing without the finishing hassel. Cost is the same as the white cheap stuff from the home center. Will cut chip free with the correct blade and the Canadian core holds screws almost as well as plywood and much better than particalboard. Use the ply where needed.
