jointer option
I would look at the Grizzly 12" with the helical head cutter. the first on is the higher priced unit I would like to have any one of these as a new shop tool.
G9860ZX 12" Z Series Jointer w/ Spiral Cutterhead
G0609X 12" Jointer w/ Spiral Cutterhead
thats a nice budget
You have a lot of options with that budget. I have the Grizzly G609 with the HSS knives and have been very pleased.
Ziggy,
If I had a jointer budget like that I would get a good used Grizzly and have enough left over for a new shaper and power feeder. Or I might just use the leftover money to take a trip to Louisiana to visit my grandkids for a couple of weeks.
Happy shopping, Bret

If your trying to "attempt to build furniture", I'd spend a few hundred bucks and buy a nice jointer plane and use the rest of the money for a nice planer if you don't already own one. I rarely use my jointer anymore. Too easy to whip out the plane. If you need the jointer to flatten stock, you can easily make a sled for your planer. However, if your heart is set on spending that much cash on a jointer, I'd buy a 12" Powermatic.
Joiner
Personaly, I would look to old Iron, 1950-60's Moak, Oliver or Powermatic.
Go look at OWWM.com and OWWM.org Old Iron is fun, even when parts arn't always that much fun. But 800+ lbs of machine sure is a stable platform.
