I know this post has nothing to do with woodworking, but I’m running out of time.
What do you buy a sixteen year old (Step daughter) for Christmas ???
The mom was easy, she got a new scrawl saw.
Help

Dave,
Pardon my prying, but does this mean your son is married to a 16 year old girl?

LOL! You ought to be used to seeing that in Mississippi! Sorry, couldn't help myself.....

Yes, that was my next question, "do you live in Mississippi?"
Actually, she's a bit older than most Mississippi newlyweds!

I think "daughter il law" was translated from the french where "belle fille" means both daughter in law and step daughter ! (and literally beautiful daughter)C.
I kind of figured he meant step-daughter, I was just having a bit of fun!
Anyway, Dave, I have a 15 yr old daughter myself. Girls love clothes, but not if you buy them! Find out where she likes to shop (Mom should know) and get her gift certificates. Good luck. If you do your shopping Christmas Eve, I'll see you at the mall.
Lee
Oops step daughter it is. Thanks. I think I like the gift card idea at the local mall and maybe some CDs.
Only one problem, next thing she is going to need is a bigger bedroom for all the stuff that she has now. I just got hers done.
If she doesn't have one already, get her an I Pod, you will gain major points !!!C.
as far as clothing gift certificates, J Crew or Abercrombie & Fitch.
Can she order stuff on line from these two stores? I'm in Valdez, Alaska. I don't think these stores are in Anchorage.
Dave, both sites have on-line shopping. My wife just ordered my newphew a Gift Cert from Abercrombrie & Fitch. Free shipping on the Gift Cert.

Ok so, here's the plan. Iv'e decided to go for a gift card form zumiez.com. She likes the snowboarding stuff. One Delta 18" band saw delivered right to MY shop. Sorry Jim, next time. Thanks for the Idea. Just joking on the saw. I'm also going to make a sign of some sort on the scrawl saw that she can hang in her bedroom. Really, what would Christmas be without a woodworking project in the shop. Looking for some ideas on the sign.
Happy holidays to all.
Cell phone, cell phone minutes, mall certificate, MP-3 or whatever the latest portable music gizmo is.....
If he were from Arkansas he would be killing two bird with one stone. He would also be getting something for his neice.
Now you're gettin' personal. Although born in Arkansas, I have lived north, east ,south, northeast, midwest, and west. From rural small town to New York City. Because of my work I socialize with poor people and with a few world leaders.
Being, shall we say, in the people business, IMHO, people are all the same everywhere. Redneck jokes fit every level of society and status of income. Prejudice and ignorance is alive everywhere and at every level of society.
And, thankfully, so is kindness, graciousness, forgiveness, good manners, etc., et al. Just a shortage of it.
Merry Christmas to all,

Planesaw;
I didn't mean to make a personal barb towards anyone. I myself have lived in Arkansas for a while and know many fine people there who would be the first to tell a joke like that. I too work with people from many walks of life but I have noticed that the most difficult ones to deal with are the ones who are worried about showing others how politicaly correct they are or how educated they are.
KelsoChris,
Guess I should have put a smiley face after my "... you're gettin' personal..." statement. I was not greatly offended.
Although I haven't lived in Arkansas since about 1970, I do get tired of the stereotypical Arkansas (or other Southern state) redneck type jokes. As I said, I don't care where you (anyone is what I mean) goes, or what level of income people one talks to, people are much the same.
I agree with your frustration of people who are overly polically correct. However, being respectful of someone else, even if it does fall into the category of politically correct, is a different matter.
Don't lose any sleep. By the way, what part of Arkansas do you live in?

Dave,
If you do get the I-pod, you can also buy her a months worth of internet downloading of music. Cost about $39 US.
My daughter just turned 15 this Fall. Music, clothes, ear rings, movie passes, and digital cameras.. I better get back to work. I'm going to need the $$.
Ok Dave heres what "we" I mean you do. First of all pick her up a new bandsaw lets say "14 to 20" Personally I prefer Delta, or Jet but any brand as long as it's heavy duty will do. Now what we want to do (oops) I mean you want to do is send it up here to Michigan let me check it out for her then I'll send it to her and let her know if I think it's a good piece of equipment or not. The whole trial period of me checking out the saw shouldn't take no longer than 10-15 years max. Mind you this is a rough time frame and could maybe take a day or two longer depending on what saw you decide to shell out the cash for. ha ha
Just having some holiday ha ha's keeping spirits bright and all that good stuff, I hope you don't take the above post to serious (wink)(wink)that is unless your feeling real generous this time of year. Keep me in mind.
Actually Dave whatever you get her and it's from the heart she will like and enjoy.
It's the throw away junk they don't give a hoot about.........
Happy holidays,

Hey Dave,
Last year, I invited my 13yr old god-daughter for a long weekend in the shop with me. Together we built her a 30lbs. longbow that she cherishes almost as much as I do the memories of that weekend together.
Share shop time, and you will create memories and skills that last a lifetime.

Since you are posting on "Knots", I assume you are a wood-worker. I recommend the gift that I made for both of my daughters when they were teen -agers, and more recently for my three grand-daughters, that is to say a finely designed and built jewelry chest. Each had the name carved on the top, and each in a different lettering style. What could be more personal? For the daughter-in-law it was a large blanket chest with her name and the year carved on the front. I promise that such a gift will be well recieved.
Tom
I just noticed that you are short on time, so my suggestion might not work for this year, but keep it in mind!
Tom
Thank's. Hoping to have a shop in place next year so can turn out some nice Christmas Gifts.
Happy Holidays
If you want to truly be a hero, sign yourself up for an afternnon of clothes shopping. Take her somewhere that sells sensible classic clothes, spend some time, work with their staff and get her one stunner of an outfit. Not only will she remember you everytime she wears it, but you'll set the bar high enough for your son who needs to learn the joys of shopping with his wife.
Dear Dave,
Easy.............. a car!
John
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Only If you make the car and Insurance payment.
She has ask for one more than once.
I'll be out teaching her this weekend.
Dear Dave,
Oh, you ARE a good man! I have three girls, but we are only at the learning a two-wheeler stage. Let's see, for my daughter, when she's 16.....................1) Jewelry... nothing fancy, but something special between her and I. Cross, Star of David,
Clatter ring, that sort of thing.2) Pajama-gram. (http://www.pajamagram.com) PJ's, bath soaps, candles, body lotions, all in nice
packages...good for Mama as well.3) Date night... depends on your relationship. Get dressed, take her out to dinner, hold
doors & chairs, treat her like the lady she is. Set the bar high for the boyfriends!4) Clothes.. that can be a bit of a nightmare, but a nice coat can be good.5) A card is essential, no matter what.... preferably with a personal note or letter from you.Let us know what you decide!Best,John
If she is a sports fan: game tickets
