Hello,
I don’t think I have ever posted to this forum before (if I have, it’s been a while). Anyway, I frequent several of the others. In any case, here’s my issue. I have an ash veneer dining room table and chairs. I am thinking of changing the look to something darker so it looks less contemporary. I don’t want to paint it, but I don’t know if I can stain it. Do I have any good options?
Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

If you remove the old finish then the wood can be stained or dyed.
How far down should I go? How do I know when I'm done? I'm afraid to over sand.
Thanks.

Aloha,
If this is a factory built set be aware that the finish is most likely a sprayed on colored finish not a stain. Sometimes this can be verified by looking underneath the table or chair seats. If you see the original wood color with some colored overspray on it then this is the case. That's how manufacturers get a nice even finish without a lot of trouble.
The second thing to be aware of is that the veneer used may be very thin and will not take much sanding.
I would suggest that since you're looking to make the piece darker, you look into using a gel stain over the old finish. A second option is to use an aerosol spray on finish. Behlen makes a product line that they claim is compatable with most finishes. Check it out at Woodworker's Supply at http://www.woodworker.com
Thanks for the info. I'll look into it.
