I’m remembering an article, or maybe just photos, in Fine Woodworking, but I can’t find it in the index. The photos were of a wall hanging. It was a sheet of wood with a carved circle in the center somewhat like the fretwork on the soundhole of a fancy lute. I think it may have had something to do with Jewish tradition — maybe it was a blessing or a welcome? Can anybody point me to the article, or maybe tell me the name of this object?

The cover of FWW #7 matches your description, except that it wasn't a wall hanging, it was in fact the sound hole of a lute. The title of the article was Lute Roses.
The reference to Jewish tradition reminded me of an ebony and silver fretwork etrog box in FWW #80, but it's not a very close match to your description.

Thanks. The lute sound-hole photo is close, but not what I'm remembering. I'm pretty sure these were color photos -- and, of course, they weren't of a lute. The etrog box, too, is in the right neighborhood, but not what I'm looking for.
