I was lucky enough to be given a LN low-angle, skew block plane for Christmas. It comes with a removable fence and detachable side for planing up to the edge. It is a versatile little bugger and comes with a “nicker” that is unscrewed from the side of the plane after the side has been removed. What is this used for? Hastings

Hastings,
The nicker will score the fibers before the iron comes past to make the shaving, thus preventing tearout.
If you set the fence for, say, a 1/2" rabbet, the first passes may create tearout before you establish the shoulder. That nicker passes over - much like a wheeled marking gauge - to score the fibers neatly.
Nice gift!

Frank:
Thank you; I thought it might have been something like that, but I wasn't sure.
