Jet 1236 lathe.
Neighbor bought it back around the first of this year. Has the original tool set and is in good condition. He really got the “turning bug” and had to get a big Powermatic rig to replace it. He paid $500 for it new. What’s it worth now?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Check ebay's "completed items" for a machine in similar condition. This should give you a pretty good idea of what you can get.
Take it with a grain of salt, though.. The shipping on a machine will have an effect on the sale price. People will bid a little lower in anticipation of the $50-100 they'll have to pay to get it there.

I have purchased and sold machinery on ebay. My rule of thumb for both is 40-60% of new price depending on condition and age. I have had great success selling machinery on ebay listing it as no shipping, local pickup only. I have had people drive from as far away as 600 miles to pick it up. If you offer to ship, you will probably have to crate it up and shipping will cost the buyer an arm and 2 legs since you won't have a contract with a shipper for the best rates.
