What’s the best CBN grit for sharpening tools?
I have a Rikon 8″ slow speed grinder and a Tormek 10″. I’m thinking of changing out the Rikon fine wheel for a CBN wheel. The fine wheel can heat up turning tools or carving tools. The Tormek is great that way, but takes forever if you’re going to change the shape of the tool much. So I’d like to be able to rough out the tool on the Rikon rough wheel and then shape it efficiently on the CBN wheel. For some tools, that might be the finish grind.
Rikon offers 80, 180, 350 and 600 grit wheels in 1.5 ” wide. I have no concept of what each of those grits would yield as far as the tool finish itself. Any thoughts?

I have a 360 and à 180 on an 8 inch fast grinder. The 360 is fine enough to take turning tools straight to the lathe. The 180 works Best for scraper. For chisels, either works followed by honing Stones.
Ditto,
Get the cleaning stick when you buy.
Cleaning stick ?
I had to look it up, forgot where I got it.
It’s called Slick Stick, from Wood Turners Wonders.
Works pretty good

If you're only getting one, the 180 is the sweet spot. Coarse enough to change a grind if you want/need to and fine enough to give you a keen edge.
Thanks for the info. Sounds like 180 for me; I can always put it on the Tormek if I want it finer.
Curious how it goes, I've been considering doing the same with my 1hp 8" craftex low speed grinder when I can justify the cost.
Call Woodturners Wonders (678) 400-8181 (A supplier of the CBN wheels) and they will help you pick the correct wheel for your application. They helped me get with the same issue. They care about your success.
Good Luck
I also think that Woodturners Wonders pricing of CBN wheels is very reasonable compared to most other suppliers. So, for the advice and pricing, I agree that they are at least one of the best sources, if not the best right now. That's where I bought my whole Rikon grinding setup, including the grinder and 2 CBN wheels. I have been completely satisfied so far. I would say that, as both a woodturner and general woodworker who uses a variety of tools that need sharpening, the number of times you need to completely reshape a tool is relatively rare. So, keep that in mind when buying CBN wheels. You don't really need the coarsest wheels to get good results quickly with CBN wheels. The 180 or 220 grit wheels will do a great job quickly on a Rikon grinder. I mainly use my Tormek for maintenance because it does the best job, especially since I bought a 600 grit diamond wheel for the Tormek.
Which Rikon grinder did you get, I am hesitating between the 8 ‘’ slow speed 1/2 hp vs 1 hp .
