Hi Folks,
I seem to be running into many blank profiles these days. Why is that?
I realize that after 9-11 many folks have become paranoid or something about providing info. about themselves online. It would be interesting to know where some of you folks are.
Just a thought,
Bob @ Kidderville Acres

Bob, not sure. My initial thought was that people did not want to share their information. But after seeing questions over the past year, it seems that they just do not know how. It my be as simple as a reminder and a bit of education.

Thanks Steve,
It's very easy to change your profile, as you most likely know. Just click on your Screename in any of your posts, then click on Change Profile!

Bob, What they really need to know, is the answers to many of the questions that are ask may have something to do with where they are. I have gotten to the point that I look to see where they are, and if they have not filled out anything in the profile, I don't bother to answer the question, if I need to know that.
Bob,
If you first have to post a message, and then click on your name in the post to get to your profile; then I think you have a)made it too difficult and b) are using the sort of logic only a programmer would understand. DAMHIKT
There should be a "my profile" button available on either the header or footer of each page if the data within is so important.
I dont know what, if anything, is in mine, and I would not hesitate to help someone by "checking their profile" first. If the question requires clarification, then ask for clarification. Or just move on.
Maybe the moderator should make a group of housekeeping chores and how to do them in a "sticky" location. This would help all of us, would it not?

Mike,
Click on the "My Forums" link at the top of the page and you will find a place to edit your profile on the left hand side of the page.
Steve
KingwoodSteve,
Thanks,
I have updated my (previously blank) profile.

Hi mike,
DAMHIKT, what means?
In my case it's probably more of a curiosity thing. Many times I have wanted to know if a poster lived anywhere near me ao as to pick their brains about local resources that I might not be aware of as well as to share mine with that others may not need/want.
It's also interesting to know where everyone is in our Community as forestgirl suggested.

Gad! I sound like a tweenager text messaging! Gak!

Bob, most of the time when we suggest to a specific member s/he fill in some profile info (maybe they're posting asking for a lumber source, for instance, and we need geographical info), they simply didn't realize the profile stuff was there! Beyond that, there's plenty of leeway to decide how much info one wants to provide.
Once a year or so, a thread such as this one appears, and a bunch of people go and at least put the "where" in their profiles so to get better info when asking questions.
What amazes me: That when filling out a profile on a web forum hosted by none other than Fine WoodWorking Magazine, there are no occupation listings for Cabinetmaker, Carpenter, etc.
You get a close-but-not-quite-completely-inaccurate choice between "Construction" and "Skilled Trade Worker".
Nice...
That amazes me too but I see that this forum is run by a third party Prospero Technologies LLC so the fill ins are probably all generic in nature.
Hi Bob
At your prompt, I have "updated" my profile - nothing here to hide!
I guess I was in too much of a hurry when first registering to bother....BTW, I had to go a bit roundabout when following your directions - I had to right click and then open to get to the page with the "my profile" link - just a hint for any others motivated by your post.
I was suprised by how little info was asked for....
Bob - I'm fairly new but have posted a few questions and comments, and I never realized there was a place to put in a profile.....it's not exactly prominently featured. Kingwood Steve's suggestion to click on "My Forums" to get to it works best....and I've now updated mine. Thanks all!

Hi Bob,
The main reason I want a blank profile for a cutter or molding plane iron, is so I can shape it the way I want it to be, anytime I want to. Maybe that's the same reason for blank profiles on the internet?
Over the years, I've just gotten used to the blank stares I often get from people when I think I'm being funny.

Damn you DRP! The dogs started barking again and I'm at work, 7 miles away! My jaw hurts from laughing.
By the way, are you still fretting? Saw one of your FWW articles this past weekend.

Bob,
No fretting, no worries.
If you saw that fretwork article, you must be taking a trip down memory lane. Take a short cut, and get back to the present.

Ray,
Was at camp this weekend watching it rain. Poured another cup o' java and just grabbed the a FWW from the bookcase and there it was.

At your suggestion, I've also updated my profile...but note that I'm a homemaker...taking care of an elderly parent full time doesn't sound like much fun for someone who'd rather spend more time in the shop.
Luckily, I'm building my shop right now...something I've wanted to do all my life and never did. I'll take 15 minutes here or 20 minutes there to do something more to get my shop ready...everything seems to be about building things in the shop now rather than wood projects...unpacking a new band saw...unpacking a jointer. The learning curve? a little slower than it was 30 years ago...but I'm more patient now. Oh, I used to be in radio. Now, instead of producing commercials and dealing with clients I'd rather be silent and listen to the sounds of my shop.
