I just got two perfectly serviceable hand-crank grinders for a few dollars. They are the type that clamp on the edge of a bench or sharpening station. One has a reddish wheel, the other no stone at all. The wheel is 4″ in diameter and about 7/8 inch wide. It would appear that the grinders lack the clearance for a 6″ stone, and thereby seems to hang the tale. I have searched the web and can’t seem to find anybody who sells 4″ wheels for tool sharpening. All the 4″ stuff seems to be flat or cupped wheels for angle grinders and such. I suspect I could use a 5″ wheel, but can’t find one of those either. The shaft probably won’t accept anything much wider than an inch or so.
So, does anyone have any advice on what kinds of wheels are best and where to find them?

No I don't know where to get one either, but if you get an answer I would also like to know. I bought one new some 25 years ago. It came with a 5" x 1" wheel. Adding to the difficulty of finding a replacement the wheel also has a 3/8" arbor hole. On mine is the name "Prairie Tool Company, Inc.", Modle 15, 5" hand grinder. I got a phone number and called and got the message number no longer in service.
Maybe you can find it in singles or go in with some others that need them. About $35 for a 5 pack.

Interesting. I'll look into them,

Delta also has a 5 incher but I don't think its 3/4 wide. Amazon sells it for about 10 bucks.------------------------------------
