I’m working on my first live edge table. There is a very small 4″ crack at the edge of the slab (see attached picture) and I’m curious if it’s necessary to add a butterfly key? Or can I just fill the crack with resin?
I think this table will look better without any keys, but I’m concerned about the crack spreading. The wood is poplar and its been kiln dried for over a year.

That check will likely get worse. If you don't want the repair visible on the surface you could put a spline in the end of the board or add a breadboard end if your design will allow it. You could also do a 1/3 thickness butterfy from the underside.
I agree with MJ - the check needs to be dealt with. A key on the underside would be an "invisible" repair. It looks small enough that filling it with a very viscous epoxy will also likely work. Just make sure the epoxy goes all the way into the crack.
