when to change cartridge filter on Laguna dust collector?
Hi everyone,
I’ve had a Laguna dust collector in my little hobby shop for about 10 years. It has a cartridge style filter with an internal cleaning device that’s cranked to knock the cake off. As I was cleaning it out today and it struck me that there must be some life expectancy on the filter. I was wondering if anyone has direct experience with this companies’ cartridge filters. Or if you have an idea to how long they last before replacement. It seems to be doing its job but if it is considered worn out, I’d like to replace it before I’m breathing micro dust particles.
Thank you,
t.j.

Surely at least once a year makes sense...
Look for areas that leak saw dust. After a lot of use small openings will develop in the cartridge that will allow saw dust to escape into the shop. Mine lasted several years before I had to replace it. If you don't find any leaks then keep on using the same filter. They are on the pricey side so I wouldn't replace it until you find a problem. You could also install a hanging air filter to pick up small particles.
Oh, that make sense. Thank you, good info. I've not seen anything obvious yet, I'll definitely take a closer look. I'll also start that savings account so I can purchase a new on in the future.

I've had my Jet canister filter for about ten years. I've gone through two bags full of dust, just today. The filter shows no sign of degradation or other problems.
I think I've got the same one you have and have been using the stock one for about 3 years. it's not your 10, but I also have not seen or noticed any fine dust leaks. I also check mine every few bag changes; it always looks new besides the dust.
I don't plan on changing it...ever at this rate.
Thank you for your info. I agree, I'll change it when I absolutely have too. I tried to look at the Laguna website to get an idea as to cost. Couldn't find my filter exactly but the ones I could are very expensive. Thank you again.

My Jet, with a canister filter, is on sale right now for 950 bucks. A replacement filter is 420 dollars.
If I needed a new one, I'll buy it. But not until it's necessary.
Holy moly. Yeah, that's a lot of lumber I could buy instead. I'd sooner replace the whole unit than pay half for a filter.
Wait until you price a new lung...
CharlieFurnituremaker, I certainly hope you didn't have such an expense. I agree with you and will start to save for a replacement cartridge.

I could get a lot of use out of new lung, though. Plus 5k out-of-pocket maximum. cheaper than a high-end dust extraction system by a lot.
I'm kidding, obviously.
Put a Cyclone between your collector and your ducting and you'll never have to worry about the filter, ever. After 5 + years of collecting chips/duct there is about a cup of stuff in the bag and virtually nothing in the filter. The cost is much less than any filter.
This is an old old topic brought to the front line once again.
I installed an Oneida dust collected at the beginning of the year. Part of the purchase included a pressure gauge. I wrote on the gauge the info that was in the manual. At 3" W.C. clean filter; never get to 5" W.C.. I would use this possibly as a guideline. I'd also be inclined after a decade of use to just replace it.
Very good information. Thank you.
