I’m looking for a woodworking store in the NYC area. There are a few lumber stores (Dykes, the big box guys, etc.) and there are some tool guys who specialize in various trades. But nothing seems dedicated to wood workers in the big apple. I wind up stocking up at the local Woodcraft when I visit the Mother-in-law in Rhode Island but this is getting to be a nuisance.
I know it is not the hobby of choice but I can’t be the only guy.

for cabinetmaking supplies, hardware, some tools:
Manhattan Laminates
624 W. 52nd St.
But it's a surprising truth that the Big Apple has no room for woodworkers. You need to go out of the city.

just wait until I hit that mega ball.
What happened to GarretWade? I went to their store a couple of times...it was about 10 years ago, but still.
Maybe someday I'll know a little something.
Ted-
I feel your pain, you can find lots of things here in the Big Apple but finding them all in one place sure is a pain.
As was already mentioned Tools for Working Wood is a great place with an incredibly helpful staff.
Garrett Wade moved their distribution center to Ohio and closed their New York showroom.
Don't discount some of the older hardware stores in the city, you will probably not find any huge bargains but several have a better than decent selection.
The flea market on 17th street and 6th avenue Saturday and Sunday. Dollar for dollar I have probably gotten more stuff from the guy by the little shack then anywhere else save e-bay.
If you're looking for specific items I may be able to point you in a direction.
Also in Brooklyn on 5th ave and I think 17th street is Greschler's Hardware Store. You can still buy a spokeshave there and a replacement blade.
Hope this helps,
Jonathan
How about Simons on 3rd Ave in Manhattan?http://simons-hardware.com/When I lived in NYC, they had a pretty decent selection of portable power tools, hand tools, etc. -- in addition to the high end hardware.********************************************************
