1. I have made (partially) a new handle for a very old dovetail or back saw. The original handle is an open handle, but has damage from a fire to the handle.
So far so good, but I need to know where I can get some saw bolts/nuts. Preferably split nut. Any ideas?
2. I have made the handle out of quarter-sawn cherry. Anyone know how it should be finished? Anyone know how Lie-Nielsen or Wenzloff finish there saw handles?

Some split saw nut sets are offered at Tools for Working Wood. Here is a link. http://www.toolsforworkingwood.com/Merchant/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=toolshop&Product_Code=GT-CKIT.XX&Category_Code=
They are called 'Saw Buttons'.
Your local HARDWARE store (not HD or Lowes) can get them for you. They are usually chrome plate over steel.
Occasionally you will find them in aluminum.
The best source I have is to salvage them off a saw I purchase in a flea-market or garage sale.
Google 'saw buttons'. You can find almost anything with a google search.

Hello Alan,
Though we've comminicated via email, an answer to the above I thought should post here.
We use Qualasole, a Behlen's product. It is a lacquer/shellac product. It is what I tended to use on furniture for the most part and so it was a natural fit for the saw handles.
It is a wonderful finish to apply. Padded on, it acts like shellac. Only the stage at which one can raise a polish happens quicker with less of a "gummy" stage. It is also a more durable finish than straight shellac.
Take care, Mike
