Years ago, I thought Google was providing Sketch-up for free, but that golden age seems to have passed. Sadly I did not avail myself of the software back then, and evidently it is now owned by some company that wants money for it.
A novice question, I guess, but 1. How much does it cost? 2. What is the bone fide company that sells the product?
Thanks!

A google search would easily deliver the source for you. sketchUp is available from sketchup.com More than three years ago Google sold Sketchup to Trimble. There is a pro version as well as a free version which is called SketchUp Make. the current version is SketchUp 2016.
Buying Sketchup
Having just subscribed to FW, I was looking at Sketchup thinking there is a free version. On going to Sketchup.com I see they only offer a 30 day free trial then to buy the pro version is nearly $700. Totally out of the question for a hobbyist woodworker. Am I looking in the wrong place?
Also is there a forum for new members to introduce themselves?
SketchUp Make is free
What the 30 day offer is that you may try the Pro features for 30 days in Make and they will then ask if you like it so much would you like to buy the Pro.
Just say no or just ignore the offer. The 30 trial is just a marketing tool which you are not obligated to buy anything.
Just be sure you load the Make version.
I have it and just ignored the "buy Pro now" after the 30 day period.
