I haven’t been involved with this site during the Summer yet. Is activity just slower this time of year? Maybe everyone is on vacation or otherwise engaged.
Up until now I’ve enjoyed some good dialogue in response to my posts, some of which has been quite educational and hopefully I’ve contributed some tips for the benefit of others.
I’ve recently posted a couple of WIP’s segments ( under Knots Gallery heading) which I had hoped people would find interesting. Derek and one other person were kind enough to respond and that’s it so far.
Where is everybody? It’s no fun reading my own posts, however, I did notice a rather frenzy like response to the post about Breise planes. Obviously there is much interest in that topic. I for one am more interested in building things and how things are built and am less of a tool geek than some.

Knots forum
Bret, I have noticed the same.
I do not have an explanation other than there have been some posts that are critical of the Knots format change. Some people have posted comments about their dissatisfaction with the forum and left. Also, others have commented on the slide in FWW quality versus the price they pay for the magizine or online membership.
People do seem to be more interested in tools than building their woodworking skill. Derek made similar observation in his WIP post.
Your Bombe chest on stand is remarkable. I wish that I had your eye for design. The arcs of the stand reflect the curvature of the chest. The chest adds a mass with its convex curves but the stand lightens it up. To me, the overall effect is strength without bulk or heaviness. The combination really works well and I am anxious to see it complete.

summertime
Don't know about others but I've been on sporadic vacation time. I've been online only twice in the past 10 days. But it seems that the traffic on Knots is slowly decreasing anyway.
The Lights Are On....But...?
Bret - Nothing personal, but you are a relatively new visitor here. You may not be aware of the recent history.
This forum is now populated with less than 10% of the previous particpants and few new folks, fallout from an'upgrade" of the crudest sort.
Taunton is actively trying to kill the fortum for some unspoken reason. The cumbersome navigation, laughable involvement of anything like a Sysop, the allowed spam posts, and more - all point to a an imminent demise. The official non-involvement of all Taunton folks is pretty much the last straw. According to a few cryptic responses from GEide (?), 'contractors' have their hands on things. This is meant to ease our concerns.
I imagine there is an office pool at Taunton going on as to when the plug is actually pulled. But judging from their level of participation, I doubt there is even that much interest. More a matter of when the contract runs out....
After they made this 'improvement' to the forums, and the dust had settled enough to see that it was a nightmare, I made an offer to start a pool as to when the plug would be pulled. I was soundly criticised for not puting forth effort and trying to make the best of it - 'Taunton would never abanbon us!' Most of those folks are now long gone.
Shall we place bets on when the lights are turned off?

Being a newcomer here, I never experienced the "old" Knots so I don't know what I missed. Everyone seems very nostalgic about the old days.
I settled in here because the contributors seem to be more knowledgeable and more experienced than at other sites I've tried. I'll hang here for awhile longer and see what happens.

I used to consider Knots my "go to" forum, but things have changed. I stop in to visit, but rarely encounter old friends or have reason to post. Dave pretty much explained the situation.
Whatever happened to the Wonderboy du jour, Jason Revzon?
I think the overall quality of the entire site has suffered, not just Knots.
Videos are recycled, endlessly, on the home page, for starters. The Fine Homebuilding site is managed better and offers better content.
If you google "Drupal" and
If you google "Drupal" and "Taunton" you can see, available on the internet, a presentation at the Drupal conference in San Francisco in April of this year by the Chief Technology Officer of Taunton. It may offer some interesting insights to you. It is paired up with a presentation by the publishier of "Time Out - New York" (who is also attempting to switch to Drupal) so you have to skip the first 20 minutes or so to get to the Taunton portion.
I stumbled across it while doing a little research. I find it fascinating to watch as publishers attempt to switch to an electronic publishing world. It is like stuff you learn in case studies in an MBA program happening in real time.

Stay with us! We're just a little bit busy this summer. It was a long wet winter here in California. So Ive been enjoying the outdoors a lot this summer and have only been checking in sporadically.
That said, I just ordered a new Lee Valley bevel up jointer plain this morning!
Huh
Really?
I love reading my own posts...
Go figure.
Other distractions
Bret,
I've been shopping for coachbags (see Write To You in the Business folder).
Actually, I've crazy busy and the heat has not been so great as to force me to take a break. I just haven't found/make time to visit.
Hi Chris,
For some reason I pictured you by the side of a mountain lake with a fishing pole in hand.

I moved...
When they change the format and everyone left, I went to Sawmill Creek.org. Not sure where everyone else went. I check this site once a week and sawmill 5 times a week. I like the FWW magazine but the forum seems to by dying......
