Where to find 30w Non-detergent oil?
I am trying to find some place where I can obtain 30w Non-Detergent Machine Oil for lubricating a Shopsmith, and various other stationary power tools. I have located it as a motor oil, but I am pretty sure that’s not the kind I want. Maybe someone can explain the difference between machine and motor oil. Any ideas on where to find machine oil? Thanks.

Martyk,
Machine oil is ALL oil. Engine oil is 25 - 40% additives - detergents, particle suspenders, etc. Actually, the oil in your engine does not wear out, the additives do!
As to where to get 30 weight straight oil, try a machinery supply house, or even McMaster Carr or Grainger (both are online). The question would be: what type of oil? 30w is a viscosity designation and you could get olive oil in 30w. Be sure to specify a petroleum based oil if that is what you want.

Thanks for clearing that up, and thanks for the sources.
Good hardware stores sell it.

another place to try is an appliance parts store.
Talk to SS. They have an alternate recommendation. I rebuilt mine recently and put Permatex Ultra Slick Engine Assembly Lube on all the bearing surfaces. I didn't want to start-up without adequate lubrication. I figured if it were good enough for the high speed high temp preciesion components of an engine it would work well on the SS.
Our local Auto Parts till sells one brand of oil that is non-detergent. I can't remember the name. Start there.

Mystik Oils makes a 30W non detergent oil, as well as a 40W non-detergent motor oil.
My local Farm & Fleet (rural mega hardware store) sells both in cases. Do you have one near you??
